n a bid to prevent inundation occurring within Karet Bivak public cemetery, Central Jakarta, the municipality will create 400 biopore infiltration holes.
Central Jakarta Deputy Mayor Mangara Pardede said recently that inundation would eventually destroy the structure of the tomb stones, hence action was needed.
“We hope the biopore infiltration holes can prevent the complex from being inundated during the rainy season,” he said, as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Central Jakarta Parks and Cemetery Agency head Munjirin Rasyid said the biopore infiltration holes would be created in strategic sections of the complex, especially a 2-hectare area with concave contours.
“The hole will be 1.5 meters deep and will be completed in two to three days,” he said, adding that his agency deployed 130 personnel to create the holes.
Munjirin said besides making the holes, he had proposed to the water management agency to install a water pump that could be used when the area was inundated.
Although major flooding in recent years has become rare in Jakarta as a result of lower rainfall, minor inundation still frequently occurs in many areas of the city.
