akarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama will declare his candidacy for the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial elections on Wednesday at an event organized by his main supporter group, Teman Ahok (Friends of Ahok).

"On Wednesday evening we will carry out a halal bi halal (religious gathering) with political parties that support Ahok. After that, Ahok will declare his candidacy," Teman Ahok’s spokesman Singgih Widyastono said on Tuesday.

The halal bi halal will be carried out at the Teman Ahok headquarters in Pejaten, South Jakarta, and will be attended by representatives of the Golkar Party, Hanura Party and NasDem, said Singgih.

Singgih said the group had already been informed about whether Ahok would run as an independent or on a party ticket, but he could not reveal the information to the public.

“We will support Ahok’s decision, whatever it may be,” Singgih said.

Meanwhile, Ahok has indicated his preference to run with the support of political parties, especially that of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

Ahok has several times expressed optimism that PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri would support his nomination as the party’s gubernatorial candidate. (bbn)
