ore than 200 illegal stalls and 43 shacks that packed the roadside on Jl. Jati Pinggir in Petamburan subdistrict, Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, were demolished on Wednesday.
The action was executed by 250 officers from the Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP), the Jakarta Transportation Agency, the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police as well as by PPSU contract workers.
Tanah Abang district chief Hidayatullah said the decision to demolish the illegal stalls and shacks came about from public complaints.
“After several complaints, we decided to demolish them to reorganize the area. We informed the illegal sellers and occupants of our plan,” he said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Hidayatullah said he would relocate the sellers to the nearby Giri-Giri traditional market in Petamburan. “They can use their new stalls inside the market in November.”
