Her father Hormat Manulang said Maya had been a migrant worker in Malaysia for five years. The family was shocked to learn she died during a vessel accident a few days ago.
“Maya was a good person. Her death is a great loss to the family,” Hormat said on Wednesday.
Maya was among the 14 known casualties of a vessel accident on Saturday night. After the boat, which reportedly carried 60 people, departed Malaysia its engine quit at around 11 p.m. Shortly afterwards the vessel was hit by a large wave and capsized. Some Malaysian fishermen found debris from the vessel at around 5 a.m. on Sunday, but most of the passengers are still missing.
