W

hat would you do after being dismissed from your position as a minister? A few days holiday may be a good answer, and that is exactly what Ignasius Jonan, the former transportation minister, is planning to do.

After the second Cabinet shake-up announced by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at the State Palace yesterday, Jonan's post was handed over to Budi Karya Sumadi, who previously served as president director of state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II.

"I will go traveling first. And after that, I will think about offers," he told reporters during the ministerial handover ceremony at the ministry's office in Central Jakarta on Thursday.

In his farewell remarks, Jonan thanked the Indonesian people, the ministry’s bureaucrats, President Jokowi, Vice President Jusuf Kalla and his former staffers for having faith in him for the past 21 months after assuming the position in October 2014.

Jokowi dismissed Jonan from his position only a few weeks after a 20-kilometer traffic gridlock at the exit gate on the Brebes toll road, dubbed "Brexit", occurred during the annual exodus for Idul Fitri.

The incident prompted a national outcry following media reports that at least a dozen travelers passed away from being trapped in the traffic jam while their unfit bodies failed to tolerate the extreme fatigue and dehydration. (ags)
