resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has called on regional administrations to speed up their budget disbursement and make badly needed investment, citing a total Rp 214 trillion (US$16.32 billion) of regional budget funds left idle in banks as of June.

At the opening of the Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID) national coordination meeting in Jakarta on Thursday, Jokowi mentioned the 10 provinces with the largest idle funds.

"In May, idle regional budget funds in banks reached Rp246 trillion. That is huge. In June, it decreased to Rp 214 trillion, but it is still above Rp 200 trillion. This weak budget realization cannot continue. It must be disbursed," Jokowi explained.

With Rp 13.9 trillion, Jakarta is the region with the largest amount of undisbursed funds. West Java is in second place with Rp 8.03 trillion, followed by East Java with Rp 3.9 trillion, Riau with Rp 2.86 trillion, Papua with Rp2.59 trillion, Central Java with Rp 2.46 trillion, East Kalimantan with Rp 1.57 trillion, Banten with Rp 1.52 trillion and Bali with Rp 1.4 trillion.

"These are the top ten regions in terms of largest idle funds. We have good transparency [in this issue], so all [the regions] can be recognized," President said.

Among the regencies, Bogor is the worst in terms of budget disbursement, with Rp1.9 trillion in undisbursed budget, followed by Badung in Bali at Rp 1.6 trillion, Bandung in West Java with Rp 1.6 trillion and Bekasi, West Java, with Rp 1.5 trillion. (ags)
