Seven RI athletes to parade in opening ceremony

ndonesia is likely to be represented by seven athletes in the opening parade of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which will take place on Friday evening, local time, or Saturday morning, Jakarta time.

Weightlifting team manager Alamsyah Wijaya said three of his lifters — Deni, I Ketut Ariana and Triyatno — would join track-and-field athletes Maria Natalia Londa and Sudirman Hadi as well as swimmers Glenn Victor and Yessy Yosaputra in the event, known as the Parade of Nations.

Maria is set to fly the Red-and-White during the parade, which will take place in Stadium Maracana.

“Organizers allow the parade’s participants to leave from the event early and they also provide us with transportation. That was why we decided to list more athletes for the parade,” Indonesia’s chef de mission Raja Sapta Oktohari said in a statement.

Indonesia has sent 28 athletes to compete in the Olympics. The athletes will compete in archery, badminton, BMX cycling, rowing, swimming, track and field and weightlifting.

Badminton athletes carry the heaviest burden. It is hoped Indonesia’s shuttlers will bring home two gold medals.

Not all of the athletes will be available for the parade due to their competition schedules.

Rowers La Memo and Dewi Yuliawati, for example, will compete in their respective men’s single sculls and women’s single sculls on Saturday morning, Rio time.

Archers Riau Ega Agatha Salsabila, Hanif Wijaya and Hendra Purnama will also compete shortly after the games officially kick off.

Meanwhile, the badminton contingent, consisting of 10 athletes, is still in Sao Paolo for preparations. The team will reach Rio on Sunday. The badminton matches are set to begin on Aug. 11.

In the meantime, Indonesian Olympic Committee chief Erick Thohir has asked the medical team to pay close attention to all athletes and their health status and fitness levels.

“With a number of troubling media reports [on health conditions in Rio], officials need to look after of our athletes, especially in regard to their health,” Erick said Friday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Health concerns over the spread of the Zika virus in Rio has become one of the low points in the 2016 Games. Other than that, Indonesian athletes have learned that Rio is a tough destination to get to for competitions. The flight from Jakarta took 23 hours and there is a 10 hour time difference between the two countries.

Earlier this week, Maria was reported to have caught a fever, most probably because of the long-haul flight and time difference. She is now in a good condition and ready for the parade.
