A

petition on change.org protesting University of Indonesia’s (UI) policy of “cleansing” its campus in Depok from stray dogs and cats has gained almost 6,000 signatures within one day.

The author of the petition, Iin Sofjan, made it in response to a Facebook posting from animal lovers group Garda Satwa Indonesia, which said UI had again taken stray cats and dogs away from campus in an attempt to control the population.

The Garda Satwa posting, dated on Aug. 8, said one of the caught dogs was not a stray but belonged to a security guard who had worked there for decades.

UI has responded to the petition with a clarification. A unit on the campus responsible for health and safety said it had engaged in animal control following a report that a student had been bitten by a dog.

The unit said it had a legal basis for its actions, citing several regulations, including the 2009 Law on Environmental Protection and Management. The unit said its actions were done in cooperation with South Jakarta’s Maritime, Agriculture and Food Resilience Agency.

“We have done the control three times since 2015. The caught animals are given to the agency and put into a quarantine facility. If the animals are declared healthy, we put them into an adoption program,” the release said.
