Weekly 5: Five go-to apps to outwit Jakarta traffic and make your life easier

People face various challenges every single day in Jakarta. From unbearable traffic, not knowing where to go for their lunch break to damaged roads that haven’t been touched by the city administration for months. But now, with a smartphone in hand, residents’ daily battle with the big durian is becoming easier. We have compiled five from the hundreds or even thousands of apps that will make your life in this city simpler.

Lewat Mana – Traffic Info

Lewat Mana, a product of a local independent developer team, has been gaining popularity among motorists in recent years. It offers users the ability to look through a large number of CCTV cameras in Greater Jakarta to help people make their way through the congested city.

The iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows compatible app is supported by more than 120 CCTVs around the city that are online 24/7. Motorists can also access information about damaged roads and congestion through its twitter account @lewatmana.

The app was initially launched as a web-based traffic information service at lewatmana.com. However, in 2011 the developer team decided to launch the app version to access a wider audience.

Komutta

While Lewat Mana is a go-to app for drivers of private vehicles, Komutta provides simple and reliable schedule and route information for public transportation in the city.

In the main page of the app, you can find the city’s four most commonly used modes of public transportation: Transjakarta, city train KRL, taxis and buses.

Transjakarta, city train KRL and bus features on the apps offer every single route of the services and feeder connections along with the location of every bus stop and train station. Meanwhile, if you want to take a taxi, app users can call taxi company hotlines with a single click.

Aditya Nugroho, an IT company worker, has been using Kommutta for the last three years and said it helps him to find the best public transportation to a reach a new area in Jakarta. “The app is considerably light for containing this much information,” he said.

Qlue

In December 2014 the city administration launched Qlue to receive written or photographic reports from residents about issues such as traffic congestion, damaged roads, floods, fires, garbage pile-ups, and city hospital and waste disposal services.

The reports are then digitally mapped and integrated with the smartcity.jakarta.go.id website and another application called Public Opinion Rapid Response (CROP), which is used by Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama to supervise the performance of local administration heads.

The app reportedly received an average of 40,000 reports per day in June. Criminal violations making up the majority of reports filed by residents in the January–March period with 29,363 reports, while waste disposal and parking violations followed with 27,404 and 18,577 reports, respectively.

Zomato

Living in a busy city draws people to one-stop restaurants for lunch or meals after a full day’s work. People want quick food at reasonable prices that is close from their house or office. For some, Zomato is the go-to app when hunger calls.

Similar to other restaurant search and discovery apps, Zomato also provides a review feature for customer experience testimonials.

E-commerce Apps

E-Commerce has enjoyed significant growth in Indonesia for the last few years and many local e-commerce sites have already launched mobile apps. A recent report found that the number of online shoppers in Indonesia hit 7.4 million last year, only a tiny fraction of the country’s 250-million strong population.
