C

ontractor PT Wijaya Karya (WIKA) has promised that risk of flooding will be minimal at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport’s Terminal 3 after drainage repairs are completed.

WIKA corporate secretary Suradi Wongso said Tuesday that the contractor was constructing five canals, installing five water pumps and more duct pipes in the terminal’s roof to improve drainage, ensuring further flooding would not occur, following flooding in the terminal on Sunday.

Suradi said the canals would channel water directly to a ditch outside the terminal. From the ditch, the water will flow to a lake in front of the airport. Meanwhile, the water pumps will be used to remove water from terminal in case of inundation. The additional gutters will also be useful to distribute rainwater.

"With this improvement, the probability that flooding will occur again is very small," Suradi told thejakartapost.com on Tuesday.

Flooding on Sunday was exacerbated by ongoing construction around the terminal, causing drains to get clogged with debris.

Suradi said the lake near the terminal had the capacity to accommodate the drainage from the terminal. In case the lake overflowed, the water will flow to the sea. Therefore, the company does not have to make special catch basin to contain the rainwater.

“All we need is to make the water canals. By the end of this week, this project will be finished,” Suradi said. (evi)
