Art Plus: Art As Food For Your Soul

Entang Wiharso, Reclaim Paradise–Paradise Lost

Indonesia’s first, and biggest, international art fair, Bazaar Art Jakarta, is returning to the Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place, from Aug. 25 to 28.

The eighth edition of the flagship regional event promises to be more diverse and informative than ever before, Fair Director Vivi Yip said.

“We aim to connect with a broader public audience,” Vivi said. “Not only will Bazaar Art Jakarta present the artwork of world-class artists from 41 leading galleries from 11 countries, this year we will maximize the art experience through educational art, performance art and special projects.”

Changing dynamics currently support the development of the Indonesian art market, which is the largest in Southeast Asia. New generations of local collectors are keen to purchase homegrown creations, while regional collectors, especially those from Singapore and Malaysia, are also enthusiastic.

“Every year, Bazaar Art Jakarta grows, welcoming an increasing number of exhibitors and visitors. It has become a key destination for art collectors and enthusiasts in Indonesia, as well as in the Asia-Pacific region,” Vivi said. “Bazaar Art Jakarta is our Indonesian pride.”

Having worked at Sotheby’s Singapore for more than 10 years and as the founder of Vivi Yip’s Art Room in Jakarta, Vivi brings a wealth of expertise to her role as the fair director. “Bazaar Art Jakarta 2016 offers you the chance to experience art in different ways. We connect art with the multi disciplinary, and you will feel art as food for your soul.”

Consolidating Jakarta’s presence on the regional art calendar, Bazaar Art Jakarta, in collaboration with the Jakarta administration and the Creative Economy Agency have declared August as “The Month of Art” and its fourth week as “Jakarta Art Week” to support Jakarta as an art hub in Asia.

With 16 Indonesian galleries exhibiting, other countries represented include Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, the UK and the US.

Along with works by leading Indonesian artists Naisrun, Entang Wiharso, Agus Suwage and Ugo Untoro; Bazaar Art Jakarta will present pieces for all budgets and tastes.

Featured will be performance art by Agnes Christina, Fransiska Retno and a “neo-wayang” art performance by the talented teen dalang (puppeteer) Gibran Nicholau Papadimitriou, the son of film director Nia Dinata, as he presents Taman Maerakaca.

Special art installations will highlight the talents of Nyoman Erawan, Iqi Qoror, Joko Hartonto, Korean artist Kang Soon Ho and Oky Rei Montha, who will perform a live painting session.

Wonders Of Weaving, devised by Lim Masulin for visionary hand-weaving ideas devised in collaboration with artists, architects and designers, is presenting the “Artspace” dining experience, by The Ritz Carlton Executive Chef Yvan Bernard Lejard.

“Look out for the Graffiti Art Wall by Darbotz and the Special Project by Mark Justiniani at The Drawing Room, Manila, with his infinity architectural art installations that will take us into another dimension,” Vivi said, calling attention to the “hyperphotos” of French artist Jean-Francois Rauzier at Villa del Arte Galleries and Sotheby’s preview of the Autumn 2016 auction of Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Paintings as well as other surprises.”

Art fairs are infectious experiences that almost overwhelm the senses. Our brains may become saturated with imagery, while social interaction often reaches fever pitch. Stress-releasing therapies will be on hand at EDUart; an educational program created for different ages of art lovers who are inspired and interested in drawing, painting, making murals, screen-printing and sculpting.

These fun activities exploring participant’s passion for art, or just for relaxing are scheduled at the fair’s EDUart Corner.

A kids painting competition, coordinated by Ganara Art Space and supported by UOB, will be held on Aug. 27, while a charity auction on Aug. 28 will benefit Yayasan Seni Rupa Indonesia, with items on the block from hot Indonesian talents such as Angki Purbandono, Dadan Setiawan, Teja Astawa and Restu Retnuningtyas.

The TALKart series on Aug. 27 will see fair creative director and curator Rifky Effendi moderating a discussion with members of the Bali art collective Neo Pitamaha discussing their art movement along with their investigation into Balinese aesthetics. Other TALKart topics include “Sensibility in Art: UOB Painting of the Year”, “Art and Architecture”, “Art and Fashion” and “Art and Government”.

Finally, MALLart is an annual program of the fair produced in collaboration with Pacific Place Jakarta displaying large-scale installations by prominent Indonesian artists at specifically themed arrangements throughout the mall.

Bazaar Art Jakarta is increasingly becoming an important regional event allowing opportunities for exchange and interaction that are essential for the development of Indonesian art.

“See as much art as you can while of course reading as much information as you can as well,” Vivi says. “Trust your own taste–buy with your eyes, mind and heart.
