Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi emphasized the importance of transparency in elections to achieve a solid and quality democracy during the closing of the Asian Electoral Stakeholder Forum III on Wednesday, which was attended by delegates from 36 countries.
Retno said she believed that transparent and trustworthy elections would impact the quality and resilience of democracy as well as that of democratic institutions. She said electoral transparency and integrity, the use of information technology (IT) in elections and addressing the challenges in elections are the most essential issues for a democratic election.
“Political infrastructure must be continuously developed, among other ways through larger participation of civil society and media in democracy. We must continue our joint endeavor to promote and ensure electoral transparency and integrity to make a better and more mature democratic institution,” Retno said at the Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel in Badung, Bali, on Wednesday.
Retno also highlighted two important issues in improving elections, such as the need to pay attention to and accommodate overseas voters. In this case, the election commissions in every country can utilize IT to accommodate the overseas voters because every vote matters. Retno also stressed the need of international cooperation in consolidating democracy. (evi)
