akarta residents may need to prepare their umbrellas and raincoats as the rainy season will begin in September, an official at the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said on Wednesday.

The dry season is predicted to last until the end of this month, BMKG spokesman Harry Tirto Djatmiko told The Jakarta Post.

August saw up to 150 millimeters of rainfall on average per day. High intensity rainfall will begin in September. Moreover, the BMKG expects even higher intensity rainfall to begin in October with medium rainfall of up to 300 millimeters per day, Harry said.

Usually, the rainy season begins in October and lasts until March, he explained. However, he said the season would start a month earlier because the wind convergence in the western part of the country raised the sea temperature.

Because the rainy season will start in September, Harry has warned Jakartans of possible floods in several parts of the capital. Besides floods, he has also warned of possible mudslides in certain areas of the city, particularly in South Jakarta.

Several areas in the capital suffered floods on Friday following heavy rainfall in the afternoon.

Inundated areas included Gandaria in South Jakarta, Kedoya in West Jakarta, Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta and the front part of Atma Jaya University on Jl. Jenderal Sudirman in South Jakarta. (rez/rin)
