akarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Moechgiyarto and Research, Technology and Higher Education Minister Muhammad Nasir visited the Trisakti University campus in Grogol, West Jakarta, on Wednesday, as a dispute took place between a foundation and the university's rectorate.
Moechgiyarto declined to comment as the police were still attempting to solve the issue and wanted to meet with the conflicting parties.
“Just wait, we will talk to you after the meeting,” he said on Wednesday as reported by kompas.com, when they arrived at campus at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Hundreds of people gathered near the gate of the campus that had already been locked since 8 a.m. by the Trisakti Foundation to prepare the inauguration of its new rector Edi Hamid, said Jakarta Police spokesperson Awi Setiono.
Awi said 30 people from the foundation came to the campus and told the security officers of current rector Thobi Muttis to leave. “When people from the foundation tried to close the gate, objections and orations erupted from the students,” Awi said in his written statement
Officers from West Jakarta Police arrived at the location and conducted a search of the campus, where some 200 sharpened bamboos poles were found in a car parked within the campus, said Alwi, adding that the police were yet to know who owned the car.
The Trisakti Foundation and the rectorate have been involved in an ongoing dispute over the authority of the university campus. (bbn)
