T

he Jakarta Corruption Court’s panel of judges has sentenced Supreme Court official Andri Tristianto Sutrisna to nine years in prison for accepting bribes and gratuities.

“[...] The defendant is proven guilty of committing corruption crimes collectively,” presiding judge Jhon Halasan Butarbutar said as quoted by Kompas as he read out the court’s ruling on Thursday.

The panel of judges also ordered Andri to pay Rp 500 million (US$37,686) or face an additional six months in prison.

Jhon said the defendant’s deeds did not support the government’s corruption eradication programs. His acts had also tainted the image of a state institution, namely the Supreme Court. Andri was proven to have accepted Rp 400 million in bribes.

The bribes were provided to Andri in the hope that he could postpone the delivery of a copy of an appeal ruling on Ichsan Suaidi’s corruption case, relating to the Labuhan Haji Port construction project in East Lombok.

With the postponement, it was hoped the Supreme Court’s appeal ruling would not be executed by prosecutors, giving the suspect more time to prepare a second case review request.

It was Ichsan’s lawyer, Awang Lazuardi Embat, who first contacted Andri and asked for information on the progress of his client’s appeal request in court. Awang then asked Andri to delay the delivery of Ichsan’s appeal ruling document to prosecutors.

Andri was also accused of accepting Rp 500 million in gratuities from Asep Ruhiat, a lawyer in Pekanbaru, Riau, and Rp 50 million from several other parties relating to the submission of appeal and case review requests for their clients to the court. (ebf)
