he National Awakening Party (PKB) officially endorsed businessman Sandiaga Uno of the Gerindra Party as a gubernatorial candidate in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election in a declaration in Cakung, East Jakarta, on Thursday afternoon.

Sandiaga made a speech at the declaration event, during which he vowed to improve people’s welfare in the city. He promised to improve the prosperity of the poor, to lower staple food prices and to create more jobs for young people.

“I want to say thank you to the PKB Jakarta branch, which will back me in the election. We want to increase people’s welfare and lead the city with humanity,” Sandiaga told the audience at the event.

Meanwhile, PKB Jakarta head Hasbiallah Ilyas commented that Sandiaga was the most capable among the Jakarta gubernatorial candidates. Sandiaga struggles for humanistic values in leading the city instead of violent actions, he said.

“We want a governor who will improve slum areas without evictions,” Hasbiallah said at the declaration.

The PKB has six seats in the City Council, while Gerindra has 15. If the two parties join to endorse Sandiaga, they must form a coalition with other political parties to meet the minimum 22 seats required to be eligible to nominate a candidate for the election.

Last month, Gerindra officially nominated Sandiaga as its governor candidate during the party’s national meeting at the house of its chairman, Prabowo Subianto, in Bogor, West Java. He was appointed based on the party chairman's consideration. (rez/evi)
