ublic Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono has said his ministry will cut Rp 2.1 trillion (US$158.85 million) from its budget, as the consequence of a second expenditure cut in the overall 2016 state budget.

"We have sent a letter to the Finance Ministry about what we can save from financial structure recomposition and drop projects that can be delayed until next year. The amount is around Rp 2.1 trillion," he said in Jakarta on Friday.

In the first budget cuts, the ministry trimmed Rp 8.5 trillion from its initial budget of Rp 106 trillion. "Now, we will cut about Rp 2.1 trillion more," he reiterated.

Earlier, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati announced a second round of budget cuts of Rp 137 trillion, which consisted of a Rp 65 trillion budget allocation to ministries and institutions, Rp 70 trillion from the regional transfers budget and Rp 2.8 trillion from village funds.

The decision was made because of an estimated shortfall in state revenues of Rp 219 trillion, she said. However, as of now, the government has yet to decide the final budget cut for each ministry and institution. (ags)
