he role of technology and innovation in inclusive and sustainable industrial development and ways for Indonesia to avoid the middle-income trap were discussed during a presentation in Jakarta of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization’s (UNIDO) flagship publication.
“The findings of the Industrial Development Report 2016 are very relevant for Indonesia as it looks for ways to avoid the middle-income trap while accelerating poverty reduction and preserving the environment,” said Nicola Cantore, UNIDO industrial development officer, in a release made available on Friday.
The report explores the relationships between inclusive and sustainable industrialization and technology and innovation. Among the three dimensions of sustainability, the first refers to the ability of a country’s structural transformation process to sustain positive rates of growth over longer periods of time, enabling it to catch up with more advanced economies.
The second dimension refers to the inclusiveness of the structural transformation process in terms of poverty reduction, increased quality of life and increased participation in gainful employment and a more equitable distribution of incomes, assets and social welfare.
The third refers to the environmental sustainability of structural transformation, in terms of resource use and environmental impacts that are compatible with the welfare of future generations. (evi)
