National scene: Public asked to support elephant conservation

I

n commemoration of World Elephant Day on Aug.12, the NGO Wildlife Conservation Society-Indonesia Program (WCS-IP) has called on the public to support Sumatran elephant conservation.

The group conveyed three messages to the public on World Elephant Day, according to Sugiyo, a WCS-IP activist, in Bandarlampung on Saturday.

“We invite the public to support elephant conservation efforts, given that the elephant population continues to decline,” he said as quoted by Antara news agency.

The group is also promoting community initiatives in elephant conflict prevention. As part of the effort to raise awareness and to boost support, the group invited journalists to visit the Way Kambas National Park in Lampung on Aug.25 to 26 to get firsthand information on elephant conservation efforts.

The commemoration of World Elephant Day is also interpreted as the World Elephant Day of Recollection, given the fact that Sumatran elephants are facing the threat of extinction, Sugiyo confirmed.
