igh tides have stranded two barges carrying thousands of tons of coal for power plants, on Teluk Penyu Beach in Cilacap, Central Java.
On Friday, the BG Sumber Jaya 308 Batam barge became stranded on the shore, after another barge carrying 10,000 tons of coal became stranded in early August, Cilacap resident Rasno said on Sunday. Local people went to the beach to watch the two barges, both of which were carrying coal for the Bunton coal-fired power plant in Cilacap.
The first barge, stranded 4 kilometers away from the BG Sumber Jaya, has not yet been removed despite having been on the beach for almost a month.
"It could not be pulled back to the sea. We hope the authorities will handle this because the barge disrupts fishermen's activities," Rasno said, adding that local people were worried about safety regarding the coal.
"We are scared if there's a fire."
The incidents were caused by bad weather in the past month in Cilacap waters. Waves of up to six meters have been seen, resulting in warnings for all sea voyages. A fishing vessel capsized two weeks ago not far from the area. Authorities have not yet found 11 missing crew, originating from Pemalang, Central Java, following the discovery of the capsized vessel in Pangandaran waters, West Java. (rin)
