he Jakarta Police netted hundreds of violators on the first day of the permanent implementation of the odd-even license plate traffic policy on Tuesday.
As many as 348 violators were given red tickets for violating the policy, which began on Tuesday after a month-long trial. There were 219 violators in the morning and 129 violators in the evening, the Jakarta Police's traffic unit official Adj. Sr. Comr Budiyanto said on Wednesday.
The violators were driving cars with odd-numbered license plates although Tuesday was an even-numbered date, Aug. 30, on which only even-numbered cars were allowed.
The policy applies on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on thoroughfares such as Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat, Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Sudirman, Jl. Sisingamangaraja and Jl. Gatot Subroto.
Police officials seized the violators’ driver’s licenses (SIM) and vehicle ownership documents (STNK). The violators must go to court to get their SIM and STNK back.
The policy aims to control the number of vehicles using Jakarta's main thoroughfares during peak hours. It was introduced to replace the decade-old three-in-one carpooling policy in a bid to manage worsening traffic congestion. (rin)
