fter serving Jakarta commuters for 12 years, the subsidized bus operator Transjakarta hit a new record with 11.58 million passengers carried in August, or an average 374,000 passengers per day.
Transjakarta spokesman Prasetia Budi said the increase in passengers had begun in June, when more than 10 million people had crowded Transjakarta buses.
“The increase in Transjakarta passengers was triggered by the addition of new routes and improvements in services, readiness and the provision of buses,” Prasetia said on Tuesday.
Keeping the dedicated Transjakarta bus lanes free of other vehicles and the implementation of an odd-even license plate traffic policy for car drivers had also contributed to the increase in bus passengers, he added.
Transjakarta saw the number of average daily passengers rise from 274,000 in January to 340,000 in June.
“There are still a lot of things that need to be improved. Apart from deploying more buses, we will improve all service facilities. We will also develop the qualification of our employees, especially of the front line officers,” Prasetia said.
Prasetia added that Transjakarta had created the hashtag #Daretochange to motivate employees to give their best service for passengers. (bbn)
