tate-owned energy giant Pertamina plans to speed up the Balikpapan refinery upgrade following the commencement of its Front End Engineering Design (FEED) work on Thursday.
"We don't want to tolerate any delays in order to achieve our target to fully operate the Balikpapan refinery by September 2019," Pertamina director for refineries Rachmad Hardadi said.
Under normal circumstances, the FEED work would have been started after the basic engineering design (BED) was completed. However, in the project, the company decided to perform the two phases in parallel to accelerate construction. Pertamina started the BED work in July in the hope of completing it by January 2017.
For the FEED work, Pertamina has set to work with engineering, construction and project management company Bechtel International. The FEED implementation will be done in three locations, namely Houston, London and New Delhi.
"For the implementation of the BED and FEED of the Balikpapan refinery upgrade, Pertamina will send 200 engineers. It's part of Pertamina's effort to develop the knowledge, skills and capacity of our engineers," he went on.
Pertamina is focusing on the realization of the six mega refinery projects, namely Refinery Development Master Plans in Balikpapan, Cilacap, Dumai and Balongan, and two new refinery projects in Tuban, East Java, and Bontang, East Kalimantan. (dmr)
