The former deputy chief of the National Police, Gen. Budi Gunawan, has been inaugurated as the new Indonesian spy chief.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inducted Budi as the director of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) during a ceremony at the State Palace on Friday.
Budi replaces retired Army general and former Jakarta governor Sutiyoso, who had led the agency since July 8 last year.
Budi was nominated by President Jokowi through an official letter sent to the House of Representatives by State Secretary Pratikno last Friday. He is a close associate of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri. (liz/bbn)
