S

tate-owned train operator PT. Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has deployed a Rail Clinic to help with disaster mitigation of the flash flood-stricken Garut regency in West Java for emergency health aids.

The train had departed from Gawok Station in Sukoharjo regency in Central Java on Wednesday evening and arrived at Leles Station in Garut on Thursday afternoon, KAI's Yogyakarta operations spokesman Eko Budiyanto said on Thursday. The station was the nearest to the disaster location, he said.

"We hope the Rail Clinic can help the disaster victims, especially as there are several health facilities in the location ruined by the disaster," he said as quoted by Tempo.co.

The train was initially headed to a social event in Sukoharjo to provide free health services. However, upon hearing of the flash flood disaster, the Rail Clinic was rerouted to Garut instead.

The Rail Clinic brings five docters and dozens of health officials such as midwives, nurses, pharmacists and lab officials, Eko said. KAI had also prepared ambulances at Leles Station to help with local people affected by the natural disaster.

The medicine from the Rail Clinic can take care of 300 patients and the firm would add supplies if needed.

The electric diesel train also has several services such as emergency services, general care, dental care, eye care and obstetric services. The train is also equipped with a laboratory and pharmacy.

At least 23 people died and 18 people went missing in the flash flood that hit Garut on Tuesday according to data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). (rin)
