ndonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) chairman Tulus Abadi has questioned President Joko “Jokowi” Widido’s decision to disband the National Committee on Zoonosis Control, saying it is still needed to prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases such as rabies, anthrax, malaria and Zika.
“It is understandable that President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo wants to evaluate the existence of overlapping institutions or commissions. However, the disbandment of the zoonosis committee is very disappointing,” he said as quoted by Antara on Thursday.
According to Law No. 18/2009 on animal husbandry and animal health, which was amended by Law No. 41/2014, the government is mandated to establish veterinary authorities.
Tulus said that while waiting for the establishment of a veterinary authority, the committee should be maintained.
