tate-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) will begin digitizing the management of its freight business next year after the organization of its passenger business was finished being digitized in the middle of 2016, a KAI executive has said.
KAI information technology and commercial director Kuncoro Wibowo said that digitization would involve a scanning system that would automate the management of the rail system, freight tracking and car rentals, which would enable the company to manage train resources efficiently and customers to track their deliveries.
"We are currently selecting the options available, including the General Electric (GE) Railconnect 360," Kuncoro said at a GE-KAI press conference in Hotel Borobudur Jakarta on Monday.
Kuncoro said that GE had been the main supplier of the company's hardware. The US company supplied 50 freight locomotives this year in addition to parts for 300 GE locomotives KAI already owns.
GE Indonesia CEO Handry Satriago said the technology can optimize mainline train networks, classification yards and intermodal terminals.
"GE has been helping to solve the world's toughest rail transportation challenges through the use of software and data analytics," he said.
As the passenger business digitization that was undertaken over the past six years was completed in 2016, the logistic business digitization would take about the same amount of time and finish in 2023, Satriago said. (dan)
