akarta Police will investigate the cause of the collapse of part of a pedestrian bridge in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, during heavy rain last Saturday.

“The bridge was made to last a long time. Therefore, it needs maintenance. We want to see if the maintenance was implemented or not,” said Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Mochammad Iriawan in Jakarta on Tuesday as reported by tribunnews.com.

If maintenance was conducted, the investigators will want to know if it was carried out properly, he added.

“They must have missed something while conducting the maintenance,” he said, adding that the investigation into the case had just begun and the investigators would soon summon a number of relevant officials.

The collapse left three people dead and injured six others.

Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama blamed the incident on the billboard display on the bridge, which added weight to the facility. He said that his administration wanted to clear all pedestrian crossing bridges of billboards.

Iriawan said that the investigation into the case would involve a team from the National Police’s Central Forensic Laboratory.

“We will investigate it because the incident caused fatalities. Give us time to work,” he said. (bbn)
