icrosoft Indonesia has said it will fully support the government's policy of minimum local content requirements for 4G LTE smartphones as long as the calculation is focused largely on software.

Microsoft Indonesia president director Andreas Diantoro said Tuesday the government should calculate the percentage of local content primarily in the realm of software as this was the area where Indonesia had a lot of strength.

"If local content is in the area of software, we will fully support it because I believe our developers can compete in this field," Andreas told the journalists.

However, Andreas said if the government tried to impose the requirement on hardware development, it would create difficulties because Indonesians might not have the necessary skills to develop the components.

The government currently applies a mandatory 20 percent local content requirement for 4G-enabled smartphones and the content calculation is solely based on hardware. The minimum local content requirement for 4G smartphones, locally abbreviated TKDN, will be raised to 30 percent in 2017 in an attempt to boost the local component industry and make Indonesia a production base.
