olitician-cum-businessman Aburizal Bakrie and timber baron Prajogo Pangestu publicly applied for the tax amnesty in Jakarta on Thursday.

Aburizal, a former Golkar Party chairman, applied for an amnesty for his personal wealth only, while his staffers reported assets of the Bakrie Group. He declared his wealth but said he had no plans to repatriate any overseas assets, claiming all his private assets were in Indonesia.

“My children and my siblings have joined the tax amnesty. I hope my successful fellow businesspeople in Golkar follow suit,” said Aburizal, whose business, Bakrie and Brothers, deals in property, energy, plantations, telecommunications and investment.

Similarly, Prajogo and his family members also applied for the tax amnesty for their firms and personal assets. Prajogo declared all his wealth and will repatriate 90 percent of his overseas assets.

“We can help the government to accelerate infrastructure projects with the tax amnesty. We need more roads, airports and seaports,” said Prajogo, the founder of Barito Pacific Group, which deals in timber, petrochemicals and power plants.

Both Aburizal and Prajogo applied for the amnesty at the Finance Ministry’s Directorate General of Taxation headquarters in Jakarta. They declined to disclose the value of their assets. (rez/ags)
