ttorney General HM Prasetyo has supported additional sanctions for corruption convicts to have “ex-corrupt person” written on their ID cards.
"Graft convicts should have their status as "former corrupt person" written on their citizenship cards, so they will be ashamed. They are too shameless currently," Prasetyo said on Friday.
Proposed sanctions suggested by legal experts and anticorruption activists made to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo during a conversation at the Palace, included putting convicts in bright colored uniforms and forcing them to do labor on public works, such as street maintenance.
Earlier, Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Agus Rahardjo said he had the idea of broadcasting corruption trials on television channels, so that it would create social punishment for the graft convicts and citizens would get more information on the country's judicial process.
Agus said he got the idea from the series of trials of murder suspect Jessica Kumala Wongso, who allegedly killed her friend with cyanide-tainted coffee. These trials have been broadcast on a number of television channels and have become a sensation.
By bringing public attention to corrupt people and increasing the transparency of information for citizens, Agus believes this could be an effective tool to eradicate corruption and deter graft convicts. (bbn)
