Foods, cigarettes, beverages drive faster inflation in September

he Central Statistics Agency (BPS) revealed on Monday that the price of many commodities in the country increased at a faster pace in September than the previous month.
Based on the BPS’s monitoring in 82 cities, the latest monthly inflation rate stood at 0.22 percent, as the nation’s consumer price index (IHK) rose from 125.13 in August to 125.41 in September.
Meanwhile, the year-to-date inflation from January to September stood at 1.97 percent, while the year-on-year inflation climbed to 3.07 percent.
“Inflation occurred due to price increases as shown by several categories of expenditures such as packaged foods, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco with 0.34 percent inflation,” the agency said in an official statement in Jakarta on Monday.
Household goods, water, fuels and electricity posted a 0.29 percent inflation, clothing rose by 0.13 percent, health stood at 0.33 percent, education, recreation and sports at 0.52 percent and transportation, communication and financial services at 0.19 percent.
At the opposite end, raw materials for food production recorded a monthly deflation of 0.07 percent.
Based on the region, Sibolga in North Sumatra recorded the highest September inflation with 1.85 percent, while the lowest rates were recorded in Purwokerto and Banyuwangi with inflation rates of 0.02 percent. (win/ags)
