akarta Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) head Mimah Susanti has called on the three pairs of gubernatorial hopefuls to respect the existing laws and regulations as they campaign for the 2017 election.

“Although we currently can’t impose sanctions, we hope they will promote themselves according to the law. We hope they won’t insult the other candidates and use SARA (ethnic, religious, racial and intergroup) sentiments in their campaigns,” Mimah told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

Mimah said Bawaslu could not impose sanctions on the candidates outside of the official campaign period, which runs from Oct. 28 to Feb. 11, although candidates had started to carry out activities that could be considered part of their campaigns.

However, the body has reportedly already begun to receive complaints from residents about candidates behavior that could be channeled to the law enforcement center (Sentra Gakkum).

She stressed that there was no regulation prohibiting candidates from carrying out campaign activities before the Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) declared them as official candidates on Oct. 24.

On Sunday, gubernatorial candidate Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono joined the Car Free Day and Tjanting Fun Day 5-kilometer run to introduce himself to residents. On the same day, Anies Baswedan went to Tanah Merah in North Jakarta to sign the political contract.

The three pairs that had been registered to KPU Jakarta are incumbent Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, Anies-sandiaga Uno and Agus-Sylviana. (bbn)
