The Denpasar Police drug squad have arrested a former war journalist for possession of 10.09 gram hashish.

Former Reuters journalist David Matthew Fox, who has covered stories in several war zones, was arrested in a bar in Sanur, Bali on Saturday. Police arrested Fox after the arrest of an Australian man,  Guiseppe Serafino, earlier that day.

Deputy Denpasar Police chief Nyoman Artana said Fox was arrested in a bar in Sanur after the police received information from Serafino, who was arrested for possessing 7.32 grams of hashish.

"We found 10.09 grams of hashish on Fox," Nyoman said.

Fox told police that he bought the hashish from a British national, known as GR, that he knew from a bar in Sanur.  Fox said that he had purchased hashish from GR five times throughout the last eight months.

"We are still pursuing the party responsible for supplying drugs," Nyoman said.

Fox said he has used hashish for the last 30 years, since he was tasked as a Reuters journalist to cover conflict in Somalia because of stress. Fox had also covered conflict in other war-torn areas, such as Rwanda, Afghanistan and Iraq. Fox first came to Bali for vacation in 2000. He stayed in Bali using a business visa that was valid for two months at a time.

Nyoman said the police will charge Fox with article 112 of narcotic law on drug possession. "If found guilty, he could face a life sentence or a maximum of 20 years imprisonment," Nyoman said. (bbn)
