oordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Pandjaitan has called on the newly appointed Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan and deputy minister Arcandra Tahar to focus on the amendment of two laws in the energy sector.

Luhut, who previously helmed the energy ministry as interim minister after Arcandra was dismissed amid controversy surrounding his citizenship, highlighted his message in the handover ceremony in Jakarta on Monday.

During his remarks, Luhut said the deliberation of the revised oil and gas and mining laws, as well as the finalization of a government regulation on mining were among top priorities in the sector.

"I am optimistic that with their leadership, the energy ministry will be successful in the future," Luhut said, highlighting that Jonan's financial skills and Arcandra's technical competence would bring reform in the energy sector.

Jonan and Arcandra were appointed to helm to ministry less than three months after they were removed from their positions.

Jonan was sacked from his position as transportation minister in the latest Cabinet shake-up in July, while Arcandra was removed from his post as energy minister in August. (ags)
