ormer energy and mineral resources minister Sudirman Said says he hopes newly appointed minister of the same portfolio, Ignasius Jonan, and his deputy, Arcandra Tahar, can maintain stability within the country’s energy sector.

Stability in the energy sector is important because almost every decision that is made has a long-term effect, so it is crucial for the government to bring certainty to investors, he adds.

“Hopefully, the appointment of pak Jonan as minister can create an impression of stability to the [energy] industry so there will be certainty, in which investment that has been delayed can be implemented," Sudirman told reporters after a handover ceremony from interim minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan to Jonan in Jakarta on Monday.

Sudirman was sacked from his position after President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s second Cabinet shake-up in July, after a string of tussles last year with other Cabinet ministers and Golkar Party senior politician Setya Novanto.

He was replaced by Arcandra, who was also removed from his post after only 20 days in office following revelation of his dual citizenship, which has now been sorted. (ebf)
