T

he National Police's counterterrorism squad Densus 88 is investigating possible terrorist links behind the suspect in an attack against police officers in Tangerang on Thursday morning.

“We believe that he has links with a terrorist group. His action could be considered as a terror act,” National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Boy Rafli Anwar said in Jakarta on Thursday, as reported by tribunnews.com.

The 22-year-old man allegedly attacked three police officers, including Tangerang City police subprecinct chief Comr. Effendi.

Police reportedly shot SA in his legs as he tried to escape after the attack. The three officers were treated at a nearby hospital, while SA received treatment at the police hospital in Kramatjati, East Jakarta.

Police seized a knife and a dagger from the suspect, a jobless man living in the Sepatan subdistrict of Tangerang. They also seized two possible explosive devices from the roadside near the attacked police post.

Boy stressed that the Densus 88 members had started working. “Densus has deployed officers to develop the case,” Boy said, but adding that they needed more time to disclose possible links of the suspect with terrorist networks.

Dozens of heavily armed police officers were deployed to guard the area soon after the incident. The road has since been reopened for the public. (bbn)
