Greater Jakarta: Fire engulfs three houses, kills family of four

A

family of four died early on Saturday morning after a fire raged through their house and two others in the elite neighborhood of Taman Ubud in Lippo Karawaci, Tangerang.

The fire reportedly broke out around 3 a.m. on the ground floor of the family’s home, where Yohanes Prasetyo and his wife Lina, both 44, their 13-year-old daughter Ludwina and 12-year-old son Jonathan were sleeping.

The fire was first seen by their maid, Neny, who could not make her way to the front door because the blaze rapidly engulfed the ground floor.

However, she managed to escape by jumping from a second-story balcony into an empty plot of land behind the house, which is also near a security post.

“Calling for help, the maid then tried to extinguish the fire with help from some security officers,” Curug Police chief Comr. Hadi Wiyoni said on Saturday. “The victims, however, could not be saved because the fire spread rapidly.”

Moreover, he added, they may have been trapped and unable to escape because the fire occurred when they were sleeping.

The Tangerang Fire Department extinguished the fire after two hours, Hadi added.
