Canon EOS 1DX Mark II, quick to capture your moments

If you want to capture life’s important fast-moving moments, this camera is equipped with the necessary speed to do just that.

Professional photographers accustomed to covering sporting events recognize the 1D series from Canon as the top product in its class.

Released in April, Canon EOS 1DX Mark II is a high-class digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera built from strong magnesium alloy weighing 1.5 kilograms without its lens. It has a 3.2-inch LCD and two smaller complementary LCDs, two joysticks for menu navigation or setting conversion and touch-screen operations in live-view or video mode.

Sadly, the sophisticated device has no Wi-Fi tuning, although it is equipped with a GPS receiver for geo-tagging. Its battery is compatible with its predecessor, the Canon EOS-1DX, with a capacity of 1,000 shots per charge.

It ergonomically fits the hand very well and gives a solid feel, with two grooves for a comfortable grip and accurately positioned buttons. Its viewfinder is also complete with a horizon level and light meter indicator for vertical and horizontal views.

The thumb can easily access the various buttons, joysticks and rear wheels. However, the drive mode, auto focus (AF) and metering knobs are on the upper right, therefore those accustomed to using Canon EOS 5D Mark III will have to familiarize their left hand with button pushing.

Sharp and clean: The camera captures the bird’s bright red eye, color shades on the beak and the yellow part coupled with the bird’s fine feathers.

Canon EOS 1DX Mark II has a complementary metal oxide semi-conductor (CMOS) sensor with a resolution of 20.2 megapixels, capable of photographing 14 frames per second successively (16 fps in the live view mode) with an ISO range from 100 to 51200. Its auto focus has been raised from the first generation with 61 points (of which 41 are the more accurate cross type).

The Jakarta Post recently visited Baluran National Park in Situbondo and Batu Secret Zoo in Malang, both in East Java, and used the opportunity to test out the camera. With the animals constantly moving in an unpredictable way, they served as the perfect objects to test the camera, which is claimed to be the fastest available today.

The touch screen on the back monitor helps find the right focus. Furthermore, any noise in focus adjustment will only frighten animals and send them dashing away. For video pictures, this camera has a 4K video recording capacity of 60 fps. Canon chooses the Motion JPEG format for video because it enables the storage of a lot more data in each frame and can be extracted into 8.8MP photos.

This camera is able to identify weaknesses of the lens, automatically correcting a number of flaws such as chromatic aberration, distortion and diffraction in a digital process. This is a luxury feature because until now such defects have only been remedied in light-rooms or photo shops.

In general, this camera physically hasn’t changed much from its predecessor and is indeed quite heavy. It has a resolution of only 20MP, still below that of EOS 5DS. However, taking pictures with the 1D X Mark II is really comfortable and fast. It’s reliable for moving objects and its buffer speed highly supports snapping quickly in the continuous high mode.
