he Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) will require candidates, campaign teams, volunteers and supporting political parties to register their official social media accounts and to close the accounts one day before the end of the election campaign on Feb. 11, 2017.
“KPU Jakarta will publicize them as official campaign social media accounts,” said KPU Jakarta commissioner Dahliah Umar in Jakarta on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com, adding that her institution would not limit the number of accounts for each pair.
“We also remind everybody that all campaign accounts should be closed after the campaign period ends,” she said.
The registration of campaign social media accounts with the KPU Jakarta is important so that the election body can monitor their content, said Dahliah, adding that no candidate and their supporters had registered their social media accounts so far.
The Jakarta Police’s cybercrime unit will help monitor the campaign accounts and the perpetrators of smear campaigns could be charged by using the Information and Electronic Transactions Law and the Election Law, she asserted.
Speaking about the content permissible on the accounts, she said they could include campaign material and explanations about the visions of the candidates. (bbn)
