akarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Mochammad Iriawan and Jakarta military commander Maj. Gen. Teddy Lhaksmana have made a joint statement asserting that both institutions would be neutral in the Jakarta gubernatorial election on Feb. 15, 2017.

The statement was made after their meeting at Jakarta military headquarters on Wednesday.

“We have a code of ethics […] Those [within the police’s ranks] violating it will receive punishment,” Iriawan.

A similar statement was made by Teddy. “There are clear sanctions in place for those who violate the military’s disciplinary code. They are not allowed to pick sides [in elections],” said Teddy as reported by tribunnews.com.

Teddy stressed that any violations committed by military personnel during the gubernatorial election would be dealt with. “If they violate the disciplinary code, we will consider what they have done and will take the appropriate actions,” he stressed.

The Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) has declared three pairs of candidates for the gubernatorial race. They are Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono-Sylviana Murni, Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama-Djarot Saiful Hidayat and Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno.

Agus was a member of the military before being announced as a candidate on Sept. 24. (bbn)
