T

he government aims to eradicate illegal levies in public service provision in a bid to improve international trust in Indonesia's justice system, Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto said on Friday.

He has, therefore, inaugurated an illegal levies eradication task force, established under a 2016 presidential regulation. The task force is part of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla's first legal reform package, in which one of the priorities is to eliminate illegal fees in public institutions, which could hamper development.

“Eradicating illegal levies from Indonesia means we are improving the trust of foreign investors and citizens as it shows we can uphold justice. That is the impact [the government is hoping for],” Wiranto said.

He called on citizens to be proactive in reporting bureaucrats who demanded extra fees in public service delivery to assist the task force in eliminating the widespread and harmful practice in public institutions.

The inauguration of the task force also marked the official launch of its central unit, set up at the Office of the Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister. The unit's main task is to receive reports from the public in relation to illegal levies.

The government formed the task force to collate reports from the public on corruption in public service provision and to take further action to eradicate the crime.

In his second year since taking office, Jokowi has vowed to intensify the fight against illegal fees, which are rampant in many public service sectors. (rin)
