ali Police are set to deploy 3,800 officers to secure the 85th Interpol General Assembly, which will be held in Nusa Dua, Bali, from Nov.7 to 10.

The police conducted on Wednesday a security operation codenamed Puri Agung VII 2016 to safeguard the annual assembly that will be attended by police chiefs from countries around the world. The operation will run for nine days, starting from Nov 4 through Nov 12.

Bali Police chief Sugeng Priyanto said the security operation would involve 1,898 personnel from the Bali Police, 1,516 subprecinct police members, in which 387 personnel deployed by the National Police headquarters would back up the security.

“Military personnel and Balinese traditional members, or known as pecalang, will also be involved in the security operation," he said after a call for readiness ceremony at Puputan Margarana field in Renon, Denpasar.

“We really hope that all Bali people support us. This event is very important not only for Bali but also our nation.”

Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika said the success of the assembly would serve as an effective promotion tool for Bali. “I hope we can show the world that we can maintain our security properly.”

Around 2,000 participants from 190 countries are expected to attend the assembly, which will be held at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC). Among topics to be discussed in the assembly include terrorism, cybercrime and drug and people smuggling, which are all transnational crimes. (ebf)
