Economy in brief: Lazada to hold RI’s major e-commerce event

AKARTA: E-commerce platform Lazada Indonesia will organize what it considers Indonesia’s largest online shopping event, the Online Revolution Day, scheduled for Nov. 11.

Lazada Indonesia’s co-CEO Florian Holm said the Nov. 11 sale parallels a similar event held by their investor, Alibaba Group, the wildly successful “Singles Day” campaign in China held on the same day, which has become the largest online shopping event in the world.

“This year we are aiming for our 11/11 Online Revolution Day to be bigger than the National Online Shopping Day [HarBolNas]. Usually our overall order growth number is 2.5 times per year, and I plan to accelerate that on Nov. 11,” he said on Monday.

The day will take place almost one month before HarBolNas, which includes other e-commerce firms, on Dec. 12.

Holm added the campaign will put a strain on its logistics arm, Lazada Express (LEX), by demonstrating that volume and distribution have become more relevant in terms of an e-commerce platform’s success.

“We see that the logistics factor is the most important factor in e-commerce because the whole point is to get items to the customers. That is why we have to be prepared, in this regard, more than ever for the upcoming event,” he added.

Additionally, Lazada Indonesia’s fellow co-CEO Duri Granziol said that between 11/11 and HarBolNas, Lazada will hold promotional days as a bridge between the two major online shopping dates, such as themed days, like Mother’s Day and a day focused on the sale of electronics.

This will be the Singapore-based platform’s second Online Revolution in Indonesia and will be held in their other South-East Asian markets, such as Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. — JP
