he Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPUD Jakarta) has begun the registration process for entities wishing to observe the gubernatorial election on Feb. 15, 2017.

“They [those that have registered] will have access to all election organizers and participants to carry out monitoring activities once they have been accredited,” KPUD Jakarta commissioner Dahliah Umar said in Jakarta on Tuesday, as reported by kompas.com.

To take part in monitoring activities, organizations must be independent, not affiliated with any political party and have their own funding sources as well as the necessary manpower, among other requirements, according to Dahliah.

She said all organizations meeting all the requirements would be accredited by the KPUD Jakarta so that they would have the access they need to carry out monitoring activities.

The accredited organizations have the right to report any violations – whether committed by the organizers, voters, candidates or their campaign teams – to the KPUD Jakarta or to the Jakarta Elections Monitoring Body, Dahliah added.

All organizations wishing to monitor the Jakarta elections were required to register with the KPUD Jakarta, including those that had been accredited for the 2014 election, said Dahliah, adding that foreign organizations were required to register with the central General Elections Commission (KPU).

She said four organizations had already registered with the KPU Jakarta, namely the Election Monitoring Independent Committee (KIPP), the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem), the Voters Education Network for the People (JPPR) and Pijar Keadilan. (bbn)
