T

he National Police on Tuesday questioned the chairman and the secretary of the youth wing of Muhammadiyah, the country’s second-largest Muslim organization, regarding their report over alleged blasphemy implicating non-active Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama.

“I have come here to be questioned as a filer of the report,” the youth wing organization chairman Khairul Sakti Lubis said after arriving at the offices of the National Police Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) in Central Jakarta.

The organization is one of several groups that reported Ahok for alleged blasphemy after he mentioned Al Maidah 51, a verse in the Quran, at an event in Thousand Islands regency. The video footage of Ahok’s speech went viral last month.

Khairul said Ahok, a Christian, could not interpret verses in the Quran, because Islam was not his religion. He said he expected National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian to fulfill his promise to finish the investigation of the case within two weeks.

Ahok has reiterated his apology to Muslims after his remark caused uproar. He said he had not meant to insult the Quran and was not anti-Islam.

Thousands of Muslims staged a rally in front of the Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta on Friday to protest against Ahok. The rally ended in violence with several police officers attacked and two police cars set on fire. (jun)
