he deliberation of the elections bill is scheduled to begin early next week following the selection of leaders in charge of a special committee tasked with deliberating the bill at the House of Representatives.
“A leadership meeting will first take place next week to formulate the schedule for the deliberation process,” said committee chairman, lawmaker Muhammad Lukan Edhy of the National Awakening Party (PKB).
The bill on the 2019 simultaneous legislative and presidential elections is considered the most important bill for all political parties in the country as it will set out the rules of the game for parties running in the upcoming elections.
The existing draft bill has been initiated by the Home Ministry and merges three laws regulating the elections, namely Law No. 8/2012 on legislative elections, Law No. 15/2011 on the implementation of elections and Law No. 42/2008 on presidential elections.
The draft consists of 543 articles that center on stipulations regarding several crucial issues, such as election organizers, election systems and legislative thresholds.
“This is the most important regulation for political parties because it will establish regulations for the elections they will all take part in,” said Titi Anggraini of the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem). (dmr)
