span new="" roman="" style="mso-bidi-font-family:" times="">East Kalimantan Police have arrested a man who allegedly killed two people in the oil-rich Kutai Kartanegara regency over the course of two weeks.
Police shot the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Eko Susilo, in the leg for reportedly resisting arrest in Marangkayu district on Monday.
“We had to shoot the suspect, as he was attempting to escape,” East Kalimantan Police general crimes chief Sr. Comr. Winston Tommy Watuliu said on Tuesday evening.
Eko has been charged with murdering Subhan Nur, 21, and Sutardi, 51, in separate incidents earlier this month. He allegedly killed the first victim by smashing his head with a hammer and the second victim by stabbing him with a kitchen knife 10 days later.
Police said Eko, who reportedly has a gambling addiction and lots of debt, had killed the victims to get their money and a truck. He disposed of the victims’ bodies in a forest, where locals found them several days later.
Winston said the police would charge him with violating multiples articles of the Criminal Code, including Article 340 on premeditated murder.
“What the suspect has done is a cold-blooded act,” he said. (hwa)
