ational Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said Monday that the country remained vulnerable during the legal process of the case of alleged blasphemy implicating Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama.
"The 212 rally is not the end," Tito told members of the House of Representatives' Commission III overseeing law and human rights on Monday, referring to the mass Friday prayer on Dec. 2.
"Vulnerability will emerge approaching the trial," he added. "Thus, we will continue to safeguard the process".
Tito identified two groups that were under the police's monitoring, namely the National Movement to Safeguard the Indonesian Ulema Council’s Fatwa (GNPF-MUI) and a hijacker group, which according to Tito, could take advantage of the situation.
"The GNPF-MUI will continue monitoring the trial while the hijacker [group] will also move forward," Tito said, ensuring that all were under the police's watch.
During the Monday hearing, Tito also announced that the Dec. 2 rally had cost the state Rp 43 billion (US$ 3.18 million) while another large-scale rally on Nov. 4, also organized by the GNPF-MUI, cost Rp 33 billion. (dmr)
