he Surabaya Corruption Court started the trial on Tuesday of the former minister of state-owned enterprises, Dahlan Iskan, over corruption charges involving the sale of assets worth Rp 11 billion (US$846 million) owned by PT Panca Wira Usaha, an East Java administration company.
Officials from the East Java Prosecutor’s Office accused Dahlan, who is also the owner of the Jawa Pos News Network, one of the country’s largest media groups, committed the crime while serving as the company’s president director from 2000 to 2010.
“The sale was not approved by the the province’s council and governor. It was only approved by the council chairman at that time,” Trimo, one of the prosecutors, said while reading the indictment.

Trimo said Dahlan was charged with violating Article 2 of Law No. 20/2001 on corruption eradication, which carries a maximum punishment of 20 years in prison upon conviction.
Dahlan said he denied the charges.
“I understand the indictment. I even know the background of the indictment. Prosecutors made it in a hurry. I reject it,” Dahlan told the panel of judges.
After consulting with his team of lawyers, led by Yusril Ihza Mahendra, Dahlan asked for a week to prepare his objection to the indictment. (jun)
